Are Drafty Windows Costing You Money?

Living in a home with drafty windows could be costing you money. As the heat in the home is turned up, just as much is escaping out your window. Not only is this tough on your electric bill, it also causes your heating system to work much harder.

Any room with windows can be drafty, but some can be worst than others. If your attic has poor insulation, the room with the attic access can be drafting and causing you to lose heat through your attic.

Rooms with exterior doors or windows can often be drafty if the seals around these doors or windows are not secure. Laundry rooms can also be drafty if the vents are not sealed properly.

Once you’ve identified the drafty rooms in your home, it’s time to stop the gap and remove the draft. Windows and doors tend to be the worst offenders and can typically be sealed off with weather stripping to avoid drafts.

If you find a draft around electrical outlets, especially those on the outside walls, you can use caulk to seal gaps or even replace the outlets if they tend to be older.

When you have a proper seal around windows, doors and outlets this will reduce warm air loss drastically. This helps make your home air tight and allows you to keep your home warmer.

If you find your home having a significant amount of cold air going through, then you may want to seek professional help to seal the area where you have drafts. Or you may need to find another alternative to fix the drafty windows, doors and areas that are causing you to lose money.
