If Spring Showers bring more than Spring Flowers

Spring is here and with that comes the spring showers. In the Midwest this can mean severe weather like tornadoes, hail, lightning and strong winds which all leads to storm damage to your roof.

After the storm has passed it is important to act quickly. You’ll want to check your home for damage including your roof, gutters, windows, doors, trees and bushes and another other damage to your property.

When checking your roof, take note of any missing or damaged shingles. You’ll want to get these replaced as soon as possible so moisture doesn’t seep inside and cause more damage to your attic and home. Plus, if not taken care of quickly, mold can develop causing severe damage to your roof and everything under it.

Make sure your gutters are still attached to the home and not detached and hanging awkwardly. Look for dents from hail or bends from strong winds.

Do a visual inspection of the exterior of your home along windows and doors. Look for broken panes, limbs and remove any debris that may have blown onto or near your home.

Once your home has been securely inspected for storm damage, look in your trees, bushes and surrounding property. Do trees need to be trimmed? Do broken branches need to be removed? Is there debris from neighboring homes that needs to be picked up.

And finally, if you haven’t already done so, check your basement. Did any moisture get inside your home? Or is there standing water? If so, don’t go in it, as there may be electrical currents in it. Best to be safe.
